So long, Farewell!

It’s been a year of ups and downs,
With happy thoughts, and tears and frowns.
We’ve breakfasted and worked late nights,
Talked to parents and broken up fights.

We’ve walked in the hallway, and run in the lot.
Wiped runny noses covered in…
We’ve made photocopies and fun little games,
We’ve organized classrooms and memorized names.

We’ve taught some math, and some reading, too,
Plus a bit of science. We caught the flu.
We’ve walked to specials then hurried back
To clean, prepare, chitchat, and pack.

We’ve leaned on each other for cheer and support.
We’ve nibbled on chocolate as we held down the fort.
We’ve washed dirty dishes, and stuck on name tags.
We’ve trash picked for pencils, and heard tongues wag.

Some got married, some were born.
We all had days when we felt worn.
We crossed the days off our morning charts
And felt them tugging on our open hearts.

We’ve been Lefty’s Lions for so long
There’s a sense of pride when we think of his song.
Next year’s changes are more than daunting –
The thought of leaving is a tad bit haunting.

Just know – everyone, whether leaving or staying
We’re a family, bound by a love unfraying.
Enjoy the summer, and good luck next year!
Wherever you end up, I’m glad you were here!

Assurance

You held my heart through radiation.
You filled me with peace while my son slept on the streets.
You placed a song in my heart the day my grandfather died.
You taught me contentment when I was bald and breastless.

I ran from you again and again,
yet You were never more than a step behind me with Your arms open wide.

So I can dance with joy
in the uncertainty of the unknown.
